Spotting a woman dodging cars Sunday morning (8/11/2013) on Memorial Boulevard prompted Sheriff Robert Arnold to stop and nab a suspected thief.

Sheriff Arnold located the woman behind the Bank of America and called Murfreesboro Police to ask if she was a suspect in a crime. As the sheriff called, dispatchers learned of a theft from the nearby Family Dollar store near Hastings. The sheriff ordered her to stop and took her into custody.

Suspect Denesha Carroll, 18, of 343 E. Castle St. matched the description of the thief, the sheriff said. She allegedly stole $8.50 worth of hair care products from Family Dollar.

“She was still dressed in her pajamas,” Sheriff Arnold said. “She wanted to fix her hair because she knew her picture was going to be on the (Sheriff’s Office booking) app.”

Detective Steve Craig, who was driving nearby, Murfreesboro Police Officer Patrik Doughtie and Cpl. Scott Martin responded.

Cpl. Martin talked to a Family Dollar employee who reported Carroll allegedly put the hair products into her purse in the store. When the employee confronted her, she ran.

Detective Craig interviewed Carroll who gave a statement. Craig charged her with theft of property. She was booked into Rutherford County Adult Detention Center and later released on $1,000 bond. A hearing is set Sept. 10 in General Sessions Court.
