School Fire at Roy Waldron Elementary

Students were treated Friday to a picnic lunch in their classrooms because of a kitchen fire earlier this morning at Roy Waldron Elementary School.

The school kitchen manager reported there was smoke coming from the exhaust fan area and alerted the office, which called 911.  The 708 students, 2nd through 5th grade, were evacuated within one minute of the smoke being reported, thanks to safety drills the school conducts throughout the year.

According to Dr. Polly Pewitt, RoyWaldron Elementary School principal, the children remained calm and orderly and were only outside for about 20 minutes. She said the neighboring schools prepared sack lunches for her students and the children had picnics in their classrooms.

The LaVergne Fire Department received an alarm call at 8:54 a.m. and responded within two minutes.

There were no injuries and school quickly resumed its normal schedule.
