The Alzheimer's Association and the local community are encouraging others to get involved to raise awareness for June, Alzheimer's & Brain Awareness Month. The Rutherford County Courthouse, along with other Middle Tennessee landmarks, are participating by turning the lights purple from June 20 until the end of June.
Local Rutherford County residents are raising awareness and funds by participating in The Longest Day, a DIY fundraising event where you honor those you love who have been impacted by Alzheimer's disease. Patrick N. is hosting an awareness night on June 24, Dance Murfreesboro is raising funds on June 20 with a day full of dancing classes, and BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse is joining the fight as the Presenting Sponsor of The Longest Day.
To help families overcome common communication obstacles, the Alzheimer's Association is offering 6 Tips for Approaching Alzheimer's, a list of best practices for talking about the disease with someone who may be experiencing symptoms.
These include:
• Have the conversation as early as possible
• Think about who's best suited to have the conversation
• Practice conversation starters
• Offer support and companionship
• Anticipate gaps in self-awareness
• Recognize the conversation may not go as planned
• For more on these tips, go to alz.org/6Tips.
