Appointed in January 2017, Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh won election to office. He took nearly 23-thousand votes or 61-percent. He turned back a challenge from independent candidates Deric Haynes and Bill West.
Fitzhugh worked for nearly 20-years at the sheriff's department under then Sheriff Truman Jones before he retired in 2013.
