State Representative Dawn White defeated County Mayor Ernest Burgess for the State Senate, District 13 Republican nomination.
White took 58-percent of the vote (10,6385) to Burgess nearly 42-percent (7,633).
White, who has served as State Representative since 2012, will face Kelly Northcutt, who was unopposed in the Democratic primary, in November. Burgess, who has served as County Mayor since 2006, will retire when Bill Ketron takes the oath of office later this month.
