The Murfreesboro Police Department celebrated Christmas this year by partnering with local businesses and community groups to sponsor “Feed the Families” and “Shop with a Cop”.

Beginning this fall, MPD officers created a list of families in need of assistance providing food for their families this holiday season. By Tuesday, December 20, 2011 DARE Officer Amy Norville received donations totaling over $1,000 and hundreds of food items from officers and civilian personnel. Girl Scout Cadet Troup 235 donated food, assisted in the packaging, and went along with several MPD officers to deliver the food to families. In total, thirteen (13) families, The Salvation Army, and The Journey Home received boxes of food for the holidays.

Officers partnered with Santa Clause as well as local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores to bring a Merry Christmas to fifteen (15) children and their families in this year’s “Shop with a Cop” program.

Police Officer Terry Spence stated: “Many of the children expressed their desire to buy something for their siblings before themselves. It touches your heart in so many ways. This program is a way of reaching out to kids and giving them something; a way of giving back. The expressions on their faces were overwhelming and we will always have a bond between the child and police officer that neither of us will ever forget.”
