Local Sports Medicine Icon Dr. Tommy Johns Dies

(MURFREESBORO) The Murfreesboro and mid-state community is saddened to learn that Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance's founder Tommy Johns, MD, passed away late Sunday (4/31/2019) afternoon at his home. The 71-year old Murfreesboro native was at home and surrounded by family when he died. Family visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00PM this coming Thursday (April 4, 2019) at World Outreach Church. Funeral services will be Friday(April 5, 2019) at 3:00PM, also at World Outreach Church (1921 New Salem Road).

Dr. Johns has been a team physician for Rutherford County and MTSU Blue Raider athletes for around 40 years. His favorite place to be is on any sport sideline.

He was presented the Thomas A. Brady award in 2010 from The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine for his dedication to excellence in sports medicine in his community.

Dr. Johns was also chosen to serve America's best as a physician for track and field at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.

He grew-up here in Murfreesboro and loved this community. He graduated in 1965 from Central High and then received his BS degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Johns earned his medical degree from UT Memphis and then orthopaedic training and residency at Vanderbilt University hospitals.

Prior to founding Tennessee Orthopaedic Association (TOA) here in his hometown back in 1978, Dr. Johns practiced in Tampa as well as at the Vanderbilt Medical Center.
