Emergency responders in Rutherford County did not have a holiday over the Memorial Day weekend. Whether you were on a boat, by a pool or on land--the windless, sultry air was mostly filled with "the sounds of sirens".
Were citizens preoccupied as they pulled into oncoming traffic, and in some cases the chemical and alcohol induced sense of celebration clouded their ability to react to conditions on the roadways or in the water.
FLAGS OF REMBRANCE HEALING FIELD
A big part of the Memorial Day weekend was the Noon Exchange Club's FLAGS OF REMEMBRANCE HEALING FIELD. This is the 11th year that the civic group has offered this patriotic and moving event. It is located in the large field next to the First Methodist Church, 265 West Thompson Lane.
There is no fee to attend, and flags may be purchased all the way up to the closing ceremony at 5:00 o'clock Monday afternoon (Memorial Day, 5/27/2019).
Again, to order a flag, you can purchase them in the tent at the Healing Field.
WHAT IS MEMORIAL DAY
Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering and honoring people who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
FLANDERS FIELD
Perhaps the poem "Flanders Field" expresses the sentiment of Memorial Day the best. Children who grew-up through the 60s, are very familiar with this poem, which was written by Canadian Military Physician Lt. Col John McCrae.
