(MURFREESBORO) On Thursday (8/8/2019) afternoon a 33-year veteran of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office retired. Lt. Joe Gray started his career at a deputy in 1986. He worked the midnight shift.

He was promoted to sergeant in 1992 and promoted to lieutenant in 1997, serving on the evening shift.

Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh reminisced, "He was a volunteer with the Rescue Squad when I first met him. That's when the deputy was involved in an on-duty crash. We've come a long way together."

Several friends and deputies shared remembrances of Gray and his career at a Thursday celebration at the sheriff's office.

Happy retirement, Lt. Joe Gray--THANKS for protecting our community.
