Tennessee and the Gender Gap Among Workers in STEM Fields

The tech industry may be booming, but gender disparities within the world of tech still exist. To understand how big the gender gap in STEM truly is, my team analyzed data from the 2015 and 2017 U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey and looked at STEM gaps by degree, occupation, and location.

STEM stands for: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Here's where Tennessee stands, thanks to Typing.com:

• Tennessee ranks among the states with the smallest percentage gap (42%) between men and women working in STEM fields-- Maryland has the smallest gap at 38%

• With an 11.4% decrease since 2015, Tennessee (#3) ranked among states making the most progress towards narrowing the gender STEM gap in the workforce

• Memphis and Nashville rank among the top metro areas with the smallest percentage gap between men and women working in STEM fields
