In conjunction with February's Black History Month observances, MTSU is honoring eight former student-athletes for being True Blue pioneers.
The former student-athletes came to MTSU between the 1960's and 1970's, which was a time when the racial divide was still strongly felt in the U.S., especially in the South. The students became more than athletes - they helped to shape MTSU into what the university stands for today. Diversity and acceptance.
The former athletes being honored include:
• Jerry Singleton
• Art Polk
• Lonnell Poole
• Terry Scott
• J.W. Harper
• Ray Bonner
• Ed Miller
• Mary "Beanie" Secrest
A public forum on Thursday will take both students and the public back to a time that was quite different from today. The forum will allow the African American's who are being honored a chance to share what it was like during the racial tensions of America. MTSU's Vincent Windrow will be master of ceremonies.
The public forum will be on Thursday (2/6/2020) between 2 and 6PM in the MTSU Student Union Ballroom (1768 MTSU Blvd).
The honorees also will be featured at a 5 p.m. reception at the Rose and Emmett Kennon Sports Hall of Fame and at halftime of the men's basketball game between the Blue Raiders and North Texas.
