A new bill being proposed in the state would make it possible for the Rutherford County Health Department to publish abortion statistics online. The bill would mandate that all health departments publish their abortion statistics and demographics. The bill has been dubbed the “Life Defense Act of 2012” and the goal of the measure is to discourage women from having an abortion.

According to the most recent records of abortion statistics in the state of Tennessee, in 2010 over 15-thousand Tennessee women had an abortion. That number does not include the number of abortions performed on out of state women in the Volunteer state. Since 1974, there have been 569,531 abortions performed on women who reside in Tennessee. Although the numbers are high, in the past three years the number of abortions in Tennessee has declined by 1,803.
