Walmart reveals Tennessee-based organization Special Kids as a recipient of a $10,000 grant from the “12 Days of Giving” holiday campaign, announced on the eleventh day under the category of “Shaping Healthier Futures.”

Over the span of 12 days, from December 10-21, Walmart will award a total of $1.5 million to 140 organizations across the nation, all providing basic needs and services such as food, clothing, shelter, and medical care.

During the month of November, Facebook users were asked to nominate remarkable nonprofit organizations with descriptions and personal stories of community involvement. Walmart associates reviewed over 21,600 nominations, and a panel from the Walmart Foundation chose the winning organizations based on community impact and financial need.

“Special Kids exists to ease the difficulties of families providing safe and loving environments for medically-fragile children without the astronomical costs of medical care,” said Chris Truelove, Executive Director at Special Kids. “We can only continue this mission through support from the community and supporters such as Walmart, who are willing to step in and help us continue meeting the needs of children with special needs and their families.”

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are proud to support initiatives that are helping people live better around the globe. In May 2010, Walmart and its foundation made a historic pledge of $2 billion through 2015 to fight hunger in the U.S. The Walmart Foundation also supports education, workforce development, environmental sustainability, and health and wellness initiatives.
