It was elimination Thursday for boys teams in District 7-Triple-A. WGNS' Bryan Barrett updates us on the first night of tournament play from Smyrna...
VERBATIM:
While the Oakland boys never trailed in their game with Riverdale, the Warriors didn't make it easy on them. They tied the game twice in the second half, but couldn't close the gap as Oakland beat Riverdale 49-45. The Patriots were balanced in scoring, lead by Kyle Oliver's 10-points. Dontae Lippert had 9, Emmanuel Smith 8 and Ricky Dunnaway with 7. Riverdale senior Tomaz Gray had 16 and Steven Wilson 13. Oakland moves on to play number one seed Blackman tomorrow (Saturday).
Rivals Smyrna and La Vergne met in the 3/6 game. La Vergne looked like they might begin to pull away early in the second half, but the Bulldogs charged back and even took a lead early in the fourth quarter before falling 75-64. La Vergne shot 80-percent in the final stanza and five Smyrna turnovers sealed their fate. Isaiah Reese led La Vergne with 21-points. Marquis Johns and Charles Sutton added 18. Taylor Vanderbilt had 21 for Smyrna. La Vergne will face Siegel tomorrow (Saturday) in the semifinals.
Tonight on WGNS State Farm District 7-Triple-A Tournament action, the fourth-seeded Siegel girls will take on number 5 Smyrna followed by Oakland versus La Vergne. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 this afternoon. For WGNS Primetime Sports, I'm Bryan Barrett.
