Friday is FLAG DAY, a day that we honor Old Glory. A special ceremony will be held at 11:00 o'clock, June 14th at the flagpole in Cannonsburgh. Well-known veteran leader and entrepreneur Fayne Haynes is giving away a thousand four by six-inch flags.

The program begins at 11:00 o'clock with Claire Smith giving the history of the American flag. Then the award winning Murfreesboro Fie Department Honor Guard will raise the Stars and Stripes.

Thank You Mr. Haynes

Mr. Haynes will lead the Pledge of Allegiance at 11:20AM, afterwhich he will give a brief talk. The patriotic event is scheduled to end at 11:30AM.

The Rest of the Story

Flag Day is believed to have started on June 14, 1885 at a school in Wisconsin. June 14th, 108 years earlier, was the day it was believed that Betsy Ross' flag was selected.

It wasn't until a proclamation signed on May 30, 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, that June 14th took on greater significance and was celebrated in many communities across the nation.

Even with that, it took another 33-years for Flag Day to become a national event. On August 3, 1949, President Harry Truman signed an Act of Congress, designating June 14th of each year as National Flag Day.
