Changes to the teacher salary schedule, mandated from the state level, has led to concerns locally about how a reduced pay scale could scare potentially outstanding educators away from the field and reduce the quality level in the available employee pool.
The Tennessee Board of Education approved the changes last month after supporters and opponents argued for nearly two hours about the matter. The move changes the minimum teacher salary schedule, reduces steps in salary increases from up to 25 in a career to four and eliminates incentives for doctorate degrees and post-master’s training.
