Two Cannon County Sheriff's Deputies were found guilty in U.S. District Court in Nashville Friday of using excessive deadly force and are liable for over $1 million dollars in damages to the victim's family.  Cannon County Sheriff's Deputies Reed Bryson and Jordan McGee were found to have violated the 4th Amendment rights of Richard Butcher whom they shot and killed as he was driving in circles during a confrontation with the two deputies in Butcher's yard in February of 2012. Deputies apparently wanted to question Butcher for a case involving stolen metal. 

According to the Tennessean, a jury deliberated for more than eight hours Thursday and Friday of last week before finding the deputies guilty and their supervisors, Cannon County Executive Mike Gannon and Cannon County Sheriff Darrell Young, not guilty.

Attorneys representing Nicholas Butcher called a series of witnesses, including neighbors, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation specialist and an emergency medical service responder.

Nicholas Butcher said in the lawsuit that the sheriff and county executive also were liable for damages because they had not adequately trained the offending deputies. The jury disagreed.
