YMCA Humanitarian of the Year Recipient Announced

The Rutherford County Family YMCA proudly named Gordon Ferguson its 2011 Humanitarian of the Year. Ferguson is the sixth recipient of the award created by Rutherford County Family YMCA board of directors to honor those in the community who give of their time, talent and treasure to make Rutherford County a better place to live. Past recipients include Bob Parks, Jack Weatherford, Dr. Liz Rhea, Kitty Murfree and John Floyd.

The award is presented each year at a breakfast benefitting the YMCA Annual Giving Campaign, which helps keep the Y available to all by inspiring others, improving health, creating community and serving others. The Annual Giving Campaign also help provide Rutherford County families with programs like the After Breast Cancer, Youth Sports, Childcare and Restore Ministries.

Ferguson will be honored at the 6th Annual YMCA Humanitarian of the Year Breakfast at Stones River Country Club on December 1, 2011. About Gordon B. Ferguson, FACHE

Gordon Ferguson has served as president and chief executive officer since 2006. Ferguson has more than 20 years of healthcare experience and in 2009 was named one of Business Tennessee Magazine’s top 25 hospital operators in Tennessee. In 2010, he was named one of Nashville Business Journal’s Healthcare Heroes and named the 2010 Daily News Journal (DNJ) Person of the Year. He began his career as director of planning at Baptist Medical Center Princeton in Birmingham, Ala.

In 1998, Ferguson joined MTMC as senior vice president of support services and subsequently served as senior vice president of operations. In 2004, he was named chief operating officer. He has overseen the construction of the $267 million New MTMC facility and the $26 million outpatient service facility, facilitated the establishment of joint ventures and completed a master facility plan as part of the hospital's overall strategic plan. Ferguson received a bachelor’s degree in business administration with honors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He earned a master's degree in hospital and health administration from the University of Alabama, Birmingham.

In 2007, Ferguson became a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and previously served as president of the Healthcare Executive Forum of Middle Tennessee (HEFMT). Ferguson is the 2011 American Heart Association Heart Walk Chair and serves on the American Heart Association Rutherford County board.  He is the 2011 President of the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He is a member of noon Rotary in Murfreesboro which awarded him the 2011 Humanitarian in Motion Award. He also serves on the Business Education Partnership board of directors, and is a graduate of Leadership Rutherford. He and his wife, Cindy, who is a speech language pathologist with Murfreesboro City Schools, live in Murfreesboro with their two sons, Robbie and Andy. The family attends First United Methodist Church in Murfreesboro.
