In Smyrna on Memorial Day, service members from the area were remembered. One of those who served our country was killed in Iraq when his son was only 4.
Spencer Hawn and his family were on hand for the event this past Monday. Hawn's father, Staff Sergeant Asbury Fred Hawn II was in the US Army. Hawn was only 35 when he was killed in 2005.
State Representative Mike Sparks stated, "His dad gave all for the freedoms we had here today," said Mike Sparks.
His awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, Iraq Campaign Medal, Combat Action Badge, Global War on Terrorism Medal, Army Achievement Medal (two awards), Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Medal, Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal (two awards), NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (two awards), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (two awards), Tennessee National Guard Individual Achievement Ribbon, Tennessee National Guard Volunteer Ribbon, Tennessee National Guard Service Ribbon with Bronze Service Star and the Tennessee National Guard Distinguished Service Medal.
While on active duty he also served on a peacekeeping mission in Haiti for six months.
