City Expands Parking On The Square and More

With several points of business for them to address during last nights Murfreesboro City Council meeting, Nate Williams, Director of Murfreesboro City Parks and Recreation noted that the City of Murfreesboro spends a significant amount of money to maintain 38 athletic fields used primarily by partner organizations. While most facilities do generate revenue through tournament rental fees, local league play continues to be a significant cost with no current revenue stream.

To remedy that situation, Williams submitted a motion to assess a $10 per player per season fee to all partner athletic leagues using city facilities. This fee will help the city offset the direct costs of field maintenance currently absorbed by the City. Many of these area leagues who utilize city facilities are also collecting revenue through concession sales.

City Council passed the motion without a voice of dissent.

The implementation of player fees will go into effect on 12/01/2018.

City Council approved expanding parking hours around the square from one hour to two hours.

The Downtown Murfreesboro Business Association (DMBA) requested that parking on the square be changed from one hour to two hours so patrons would have more time to conduct business, eat, and shop without being ticketed. As a result of the request, Assistant City Manager Jennifer Moody with help from the DMBA surveyed local businesses in the downtown area. The survey results showed an overwhelming consensus to change the one-hour parking to two-hour parking.
Additionally, parking availability should not be diminished because two events caused more parking spaces to be now available in the downtown area: the addition of the county parking garage and the relocation of the Murfreesboro Police Department to Highland Avenue.
