(MURFREESBORO) Local Airbnb facilities here in Murfreesboro have hosted 1,100 guests during this season's MTSU football games. Officials says that added another $75,000 to the local economy.
This includes a projected 200 guest arrivals and $14,000 in supplemental income during this coming weekend's Senior Day game versus UAB. The most dynamic stretch for the home sharing community came during the weekend of the Homecoming game against Charlotte, which represented the largest influx of Airbnb guests to Murfreesboro in the history of the platform.
With local hotels achieving peak occupancy during major events associated with the university, the growth of home sharing in Murfreesboro has allowed the city to host thousands of extra visitors and take full advantage of the unique economic opportunity. This benefits the local merchant community by keeping visitors' food and shopping dollars within Murfreesboro's corporate limits.
The city benefits further from the expanded lodging capacity during MTSU home weekends thanks to a tax agreement between Airbnb and the Tennessee Department of Revenue that authorizes Airbnb to collect state and local taxes on behalf of its hosts and remit the revenue back to the state.
