Around 2:15 Christmas morning (12/25/2011) firefighters responded to Specialty Arms II at 184 Old Nashville Highway in La Vergne. It took less than a minute for the first unit to arrive and the flames were extinguished in less than an hour. However, exploding ammunition inside created a dangerous situation for emergency responders.
Officials say arson is suspected, and an arrest warrant has been issued on someone described as a person of interest.
Firefighters stayed at the scene for several hours, to make certain there was not a re-kindle. Workers had to wait until first light to begin securing the structure. Steel bars, chains and large locks were used to keep others out of the structure. Postings on the internet claim the retailer had over 1,500 guns.
The Department of Homeland Security was notified, which is standard procedure when there is a fire at a weapons retailers.
