Murfreesboro's 18th Annual Earth Day Celebration is headed your way - AND SOON!

The event will be on Saturday, April 27th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. As in years past, Earth Day will be on the historic public square in downtown Murfreesboro.

This year's theme is: "S.O.S. SAVE OUR SPECIES: PROTECT, DON'T NEGLECT TN WILDLIFE". The 2019 Earth Day Celebration will be focusing on protecting the endangered species of Tennessee, such as the Nashville Crayfish, the Leafy Prairie-Clover and the Gray Bat.

The very first Earth Day took place after Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson witnessed the 1969 oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The aftermath of the disaster inspired him to teach others the need to focus on the environment.

The idea for a national day to focus on the environment came to Earth Day founder Gaylord Nelson, then a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, after witnessing the ravages of the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California. The first Earth Day festivities took place all across the nation on April 22, 1970.

Each year in Rutherford County, the event is planned and organized by Murfreesboro Electric under the direction of Amy Byers.

Businesses and non-profits can participate in the local Earth Day Celebration by registering their organization. The deadline for applications is Friday, April 19, 2019 (Registration Forms Below).
