Murfreesboro, Tenn. - The Center for the Arts continues its the 2019 season with Shakespeare in Love. The play, adapted from the 1998 Academy Award winning movie, is a romantic comedy that questions how young Will Shakespeare came to be the revered poet that we know him as today. It is funny, quick, clever and filled with references from famous Shakespeare works. Shakespeare in Love opens on Friday, September 20.
"I am beyond thrilled to be presenting this magnificent play at the Center for the Arts," says director Connie Downer. "It is always such a joy and an honor to direct a play as well written as Shakespeare in Love. There is music, singing, dancing, swordfights, lots of laughter, a few tears, and even a bit with a dog. This is a show about the crazy people who do theatre and anyone that loves theatre should come out and share an evening with us."
Shakespeare in Love is a modern exploration of the possible events that inspired the writing of Romeo and Juliet. As the story begins, Young Will Shakespeare (Christopher Dalton) has writer's block... the deadline for his new play is fast approaching but he's in desperate need of inspiration. That is, until he finds and falls for his muse - the rebellious aristocrat Viola (Charlotte I. Myhre). This beautiful young woman is Will's greatest admirer and will stop at nothing (including breaking the law) to appear in his near play. Against a bustling background of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming and backstage theatrics, Will's love for Viola quickly blossoms and inspires him to write his greatest masterpiece.
