The State of Tennessee Department of Finance reports that monthly revenue collections are down by almost $700 million for the month of April. The amount collected is far below what was foretasted 12 months ago and is due to the COVID-19 shutdown.

While state revenue collections are below the budget line and will potentially be down for months to come, collections were up the previous 8 months by $605 million.

Due to the state collecting more in tax revenue than what was budgeted prior to April 2020, the $700 million shortfall last month only represents a negative 1% difference in collections versus budgeted. Future months will give finance experts a more vivid picture on the extent of damage caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
