A proposed bill dealing with the right to bear arms is receiving a lot of attention in Tennessee right now. The bill in question spells out the right to pursue civil action against others and government officials if the right to possess a gun is violated or if a gun is seized for any number of days.

Reports indicate the bill could lead to an increase of lawsuits if a citizen is told they cannot have a firearm on government or private property - be it a park or inside a business. The bill states that it is a violation of an individual's civil rights protected by both the Tennessee and the United States Constitution. If that right is violated, it allows for the person who was violated against the ability to sue in a civil courtroom.

The bill also suggests that if a gun is confiscated from an individual by a governmental department, each day that gun is held by the governmental department equals damages of $500 per day if the person who had their gun seized takes the issue to court. Furthermore, it will allow for the impacted individual to sue for attorney fee's and court costs.

Under the bill, businesses could place their company in danger of being sued if they post signs that read "No guns allowed."

Changes to the wording of the bill are being discussed and the bill is in the Judiciary Committee for more clarification. Discussions of House Bill 2536 have been scheduled for the week of June 8th.
