Siegle High School Teacher Wins Outstanding Biology Teacher Award

The selection committee for the N.A.C.T voted June 14th on the Outstanding Biology Teacher Award. After a lengthy review and interviews with staff and students alike, the committee decided on Siegle High School's Biology teacher Mrs Hurt. Mrs. Hurt grew up in west Tennessee and says she has been hooked on biology since 6th grade.

Mrs. Hurt contributes her love of Biology to her 6th grade teacher Mrs. Leonard and noted that the science project she completed on the effectiveness of sunscreen while in her class the same year got her officially hooked on biology. It was not until later she realized she would be teaching the subject.

Her college years were spent at MTSU. As a grad student she was back at MTSU teaching general bio labs and decided teaching students full time was her passion. Fast forward to 2020 and she is headed into her 14th year of teaching, all with Siegle High School.

When speaking on the award Mrs. Hurt said, "although I was aware of the nomination, it was a great surprise to win the award."

When asked about her hobbies outside of work she said "getting people outdoors." So its no surprise that she spends her time hiking with the family and kayaking when the weather allows. We learned that her husband is a teacher at Riverdale High School and the two of them run the environmental clubs for both schools.

Heading into year 14 as a teacher at Siegle High School only great things are on the way for Mrs. Hurt and her overwhelming passion for teaching her students. Listen in to the full interview below with WGNS reporter Nick Cohn.
