The Murfreesboro Rotary Club is holding a speech contest that's open to all high school age students in Rutherford County. The event will be at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, March 29th, at the Boys and Girls Club of Rutherford County located at 820 Jones Boulevard, behind Jackson Heights.

Rotarian Todd Bale told WGNS News that students ages 12 to 18 will base their talk on Rotary's "4-Way Test". The talks are to be a maximum of four to six minutes. First place winner receives $100, with $75 for the second place and $50 for third place entrant. The first place local entry competes on the district level for a $1,000 college scholarship.

Rotary's well-known "4-Way Test"

1. Is it the truth?

2. Is it fair to all concerned?

3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships?

4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?

Participants will be judged on: (1) content and creative quality of the material, (2) poise and confidence, (3) voice and diction, (4) body action, gesture and non-verbal communication, and (5) speech should be memorized (use of notes count down).
