A Rutherford County mother, who taught in Bedford County Schools, was charged Thursday with felony aggravated child abuse of her 14-year-old adopted son, a Rutherford County Sheriff’s detective said Tuesday.

Cynthia Hunter, 43, of Meadowwood Drive near Murfreesboro, was charged after she “allegedly threw a plate of Hamburger Helper in her son’s face,” said Detective Phil Brooks. The boy suffered second-degree burns and severe blisters on his forehead and left cheek the night of March 14.

“There was no medical attention the night of the 14th,” Brooks said, adding the boy sought medical attention March 15 from the school nurse at his Rutherford County school.

His father took him to the doctor’s office after the investigation began. The Department of Children’s Services removed both the 14-year-old and two other adopted children from the home.

Hunter posted an $8,000 bond. A hearing on the charge is set April 18 in General Sessions Court.

Bedford County Schools’ superintendent’s office confirmed Hunter resigned her position.
