North 'Boro Homeowners Push For Change

Members of the North Murfreesboro Homeowners are pushing for changes in city government. In a press release, the group notes that the turbulent events of 2011 are still vivid in their minds.

Last June they alledge that a blatant breach of trust was made when a zoning ordinance was overturned on the Haynes property at Memorial Blvd and King Ridge Drive. The original zoning was designed, as stated in council documents, to protect the homeowners from future commercial developments. In an abrupt about-face, both the City Planners and the City Council voted to rezone the property to allow high-density apartments and commercial developments to be built on the 30 acre parcel, bringing much of the development too close for comfort for established homeowners.

Gilley, Bratcher and Washington, who are running for re-election, all voted to rezone the property against the homeowners' wishes, while contradicting the councils' own documented words that the zoning should not be changed.

The residents of Regency Park, Brentmeade and surrounding neighborhoods see this upcoming election as a means to bring more honor back to the City Council and the city. "The next vote may affect your neighborhood, " says Marrie Laster of Regency Park. "The facts speak for themselves. At the last North Murfreesboro Alliance meeting the homeowners voted unanimously against having an apartment built adjacent to the neighborhood. The incumbents, Toby Gilley, Chris Bratcher, and Ron Washington, all voted to implement this plan anyway. We did not have anyone looking out for our district. We have to move toward responsible growth."

The North Murfreesboro Alliance has endorsed four candidates for election; Eddie Smotherman, Rick Turner, Danny Brandon and Connor Moss. Even though there are only three positions to be filled, the Alliance believes that each of these candidates have the potential to lead Murfreesboro with honor and integrity.
