There will be an election on August 2nd for two positions on the City School Board. The City Council filled two vacancies on the Murfreesboro City School Board with the appointments of Collier Smith on Sept. 29, 2011 and Nancy Rainier on Jan. 12, 2012. Under past practice, persons appointed to fill vacancies served out the duration of the term. For both the Smith and Rainier appointments, this would have been through 2014.
Under an unusual, population-based, State law (T.C.A. 6-53-106), that became applicable to Murfreesboro with the 2010 Census figures, appointments to vacant School Board positions are deemed interim and an election must be held. The deadline for qualifying for the August 2nd election is noon on April 5th. The City Attorney, after consultation with the State Coordinator of Elections, wrote a letter to the City Council advising them of the issue last Thursday. The School Board members and the Rutherford County legislative delegation were also notified. Persons interested in qualifying for the August election for the two School Board seats should contact Nicole Lester, Rutherford County Election Administrator.
