La Vergne Delinquent Taxpayers to Be Publicized

Property owners in LaVergne who have not paid their 2011 taxes will be listed on the city web page beginning April 2, along with the property address. Tax bills were first mailed on October 1, 2011 and were due February 29, 2012. A second tax notice was sent to delinquent taxpayers on March 1.

“State law previously required the publication of names of delinquent taxpayers in newspapers, but that was a very expensive mandate,” said Mayor Senna Mosley. “We now have the ability to publish these names on the city web page at no charge. We are hopeful that by alerting people online, they will be made aware that they owe taxes in case they did not receive their notices by mail.”

Escrow accounts typically pay the majority of property taxes. The most difficult taxes to collect are personal property taxes for home businesses.

“If a business was open on January 1 and closed their doors on January 2, they still have to pay for the year,” said Evie Rutledge, director of the Tax Department. “They can, however, appeal the tax through the Property Assessor’s Office in Rutherford County.”

Unpaid taxes from 2009 and previous years have been turned over to the county Chancery Court in accordance with state law. Unpaid taxes for 2010 will be turned over the first week of April.
