No Fence Around County Jail

Believe it or not, an item on Sheriff Robert Arnold's wish list is for a fence around the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center. Right, corners were obviously cut when the 9-story high-rise jail was constructed 15-years ago. One of those was a fence . . .

On the WGNS' Action Line radio broadcast, Sheriff Arnold announced that the kitchen renovations would be completed around August first. Since last September, the almost twenty-seven hundred meals daily have been prepared a couple of miles away at the work house.

The sheriff is also trying to reduce the maxed-out jail population by creating two for one jobs that allow qualifying inmates to reduce their sentences by participating in work programs that are acceptable by the courts.

As of Wednesday, the jail population was 895 inmates, 40 of those were foreign born and only 27 were illegal immigrants--that's only about 3 per cent of the total.
