Murfreesboro's Ed Maupin received the Rotarian of the Year award for District 6760. He is a member of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club, which meets Tuesdays at noon at the Stones River Country Club. The Murfreesboro club was founded in 1919. It is one of 62 clubs in the district that covers the area west of highway 231 to the Mississippi River, excluding Shelby County.

Maupin first joined the Rotary Club of West Knoxville in 1978 and he has been extremely active at the club level and in District 6780 prior to moving to Murfreesboro in 2007. He served as president of the West Knoxville club and has also served as president of the Murfreesboro Rotary Club from 2010-2011.

He currently serves as Chair of the District 6760 Rotary Leadership Institute and is responsible for the training of current and future club leaders for the 62 clubs in D6760.

Ed says that he has thoroughly enjoyed his 33 years as a Rotarian. He has benefited both personally and professionally from his interactions with other Rotarians, the training provided to Rotary leaders and his involvement with various projects at both the local and the international levels.

The highlight of his Rotary career was when Rotary International took on the challenge of eradicating polio in the world in 1985. Although the job is not yet complete, we are now down to only three countries - Pakistan, Afghanistan and Nigeria to complete this major project.

All Rotary clubs are involved with local projects and most (including the Rotary Club of Murfreesboro) are also involved with various international projects.
Rotary was founded in 1905 and it is the oldest civic organization in the world.

The current areas of focus for Rotary are as follows:

Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
Disease prevention and treatment
Water and sanitation
Maternal and child health
Basic education and literacy
Economic and community development

Maupin commented that there is something in Rotary for everyone and I think we do an excellent job of meeting our mission to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.

Rotarians gain leadership skills and knowledge that will be beneficial to them in Rotary and also in their business professions.

Again, Murfreesboro Rotary Club's Ed Maupin has been named the District 6760 Rotarian of the Year.
