The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held an official Congressional field hearing at the Business and Aerospace Building on the MTSU campus Monday.  The hearing, which focused on job creation in Tennessee, featured a panel of speakers including Rep. Scott Desjarlais and Rep. Diane Black, Sen. Bob Corker, and Governor Bill Haslam, as well as William Hagerty, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, who says our growth is far ahead of the rest of the nation.  The panel roundly agreed that two of the biggest hindrances to job growth were too many Environmental Protection Agency regulations, as well as the shortcomings of the Dodd-Frank Act, which placed regulation of the financial industry in the hands of the government.  Recent healthcare legislation was also blamed for making it harder to fill jobs in our nation’s restaurants, long known as one of the biggest industries for new employment.  Senator Lamar Alexander, also on hand, added that the failure to repeal outdated legislation, which bogs down the system, is at fault as well, and that a comprehensive oversight session should be held every other year to trim the fat.  Corker stated that he believes economic uncertainty has a chilling effect on jobs.  Gov. Haslam also said that because Tennessee has its house in order, we’ve unjustly been made to shoulder the burden of other states.
