A truly special team...
Jon Dinkins and Bryan Barrett had the call here on WGNS of the Class Triple-A championship game, which saw Riverdale defeat Science Hill 78-69. Science Hill, ranked number two in the state and 11th nationally, put up a good fight. They cut
Riverdale's lead to two early in the fourth quarter. However, the Lady Warriors answered with eight points in a row, which forced Science Hill to foul. Riverdale knocked down their free throw to secure the win. Alexa Middleton led the Lady Warriors with 20 points in the game and both Tyisha Petty and Olivia Jones chipped in 16. Both Middleton and Jones were Miss Basketball finalists, with the award going to Nina Davis of Memphis Central. The duo was joined by Petty, Shelbie Davenport and Tiffany Jones on the All-State Tournament team.
The Lady Warriors shattered the history books this season. They finished with an unblemished record, 35-and-0. They're also ranked number one nationally in two polls and won 58-games in a row. The championship for Riverdale is their second in as many years and their third in the last four. The Lady Warrior program has four gold balls in their trophy case, starting back in 2007 with Coach Michael Burt. Hilleary Hodges' team won it all in 2010. John Wild coached Riverdale to last year's st te title and Cory Barrett this year.
