For the first time since 1984, the Tennessee General Assembly is considering redrawing its judicial districts. There would be two fewer districts, plus Rutherford and Williamson Counties would each represent their own district.
Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsay unveiled the plan to mixed reviews on Monday (3/11/2013). Debates in the state senate and house must reach an agreement to send to the governor for approval.
The proposal changes the judicial districts from 31 to 29, and saves the state approximately $600,000.
Presently, Rutherford and Cannon Counties make this judicial district. Williamson, Hickman, Perry and Lewis currently make another district. Because of population growth, Ramsay's proposal make Rutherford County its own judicial district with no additional counties and the same is true for Williamson County.
With both Rutherford and Williamson each being their own judicial district, Cannon County would be merged with Coffee, Warren and Van Buren Counties. And with the remaining counties that were linked with Williamson, Hickman would be placed with Humphreys, Dickson, Cheatham, Houston and Stewart. While Maury would tie with Lewis, Perry, Wayne, Lawrence and Giles.
