Law Enforcement in the City of Murfreesboro continues to gather more information on a hit and run accident involving a pedestrian on Jones Boulevard near Mitchell Neilson Schools Monday night. The victim,  identified as 24-year old Jonathan Smits, was said to have been run over by his girlfriends’ ex-husband. Prior to the incident the accused suspect, Michael Dennis, Jr., allegedly sent threatening text messages to Smits.

The police report stated that the girlfriend, Caitlin Dennis, “Advised that her boyfriend walked outside in front of the residence near the street and that Michael Dennis, Jr. was driving in front of the residence, then made a u-turn and accelerated toward Mr. Smits and running over him with the vehicle.” It was stated in the report that Dennis then fled the scene.

Later the following morning on Tuesday (4/16/13) the suspect was stopped on I-24 where he was charged with DUI and violation of the implied consent law. His Lexus was seized and the case is now pending investigation by Murfreesboro Police Detectives. The incident offense was labeled as “attempted murder,” but that charge has not been filed against Michael Dennis of Volunteer Road at this point. In fact, Dennis is out of jail after posting a $3,000 bond. WGNS will continue to follow developments in this situation.

In the meantime, Smit is at Middle Tennessee Medical Center. His condition has not been released.
